Saying electricity is expensive, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said criminals especially drug lords and corrupt government officials should be hanged and not burned on an electric chair.
They should be executed by hanging, said Duterte on Wednesday in Ozanis City before a huge crowd attending his Listening Tour on Federalism.
Why should I spend for electricity? Criminals should be hanged with a barbed wire, he said sparking loud laughter.
Duterte is being pushed to run for President partly for his famous iron-fist anti-drug and anti-corruption campaign.
In Iloilo City last week, local officials said they hope Duterte would become President to help them curb rampant drug use and dealing in the city.
If I become president, you’ll regret it. The Philippines will be like Davao, said Duterte who strongly opposed the abolition of the death penalty when he was elected as member of the House of Representatives in 1998.
Human rights groups said the hundreds of summary killings of suspected criminals in Davao City were carried out by the Davao Death Squad (DDS) that they claimed is backed by police and Duterte.
The Philippine Commission on Human Rights (CHR) years ago investigated Duterte on his alleged link to the gunmen and the extrajudicial executions that also caught the attention of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR).
