Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, the youngest son of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, does not have politics in his blood.
Told by Mayor Duterte to run for an elective position in the 2016 election, Baste refused.
Baste told me he doesn’t want politics, Duterte told the media.
Baste refused to throw his hat into the political ring during a recent powwow to discuss the 2016 election called by Duterte attended by former Mayor Sara Duterte and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte.
Duterte said he could not force his son to dip his fingers into politics.
If Baste decides to run, he would be the ninth in a string of Dutertes to dabble in politics that started with the late Davao Province Governor Vicente Duterte, Mayor Duterte’s father.
The list includes the siblings of the mayor: Benjamin “Bong” Duterte, one-term city councilor (1992-1995), Jocelyn Duterte who lost in several attempts to grab a Third District city council seat and Blue Boy Duterte who run and lost in the First District congressional race in 1998.
The mayor’s daughter Sara was vice mayor before winning as mayor in 2010. She went into her law practice after a single term.
Son Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte as barangay captain of Catalunan Grande sat in the City Council as president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) before being elected to his current post in 2013.
Another Duterte, January wife of the vice mayor, is the barangay captain of Catalunan Grande and president of ABC and is sitting as sectoral representative for the barangays in the City Counci.
The late Soledad Duterte, the mayor’s mother, was into militant politics and actively participated in mass. actions that led to the ouster of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.
After the 1986 EDSA revolution, she refused a position in the Cory Aquino government that installed then city prosecutor Rodrigo Duterte as Davao City interim vice mayor in 1988. Soledad was the one who pushed his son into politics.
Duterte would win his first election in the mayoral race of 1988 against the then interim mayor Zafiro Respicio.
Baste, a businessman, was earlier reported to be running for Congress in the Third District with incumbent Representative Isidro Ungab winding his three terms.
Duterte said he is keeping his hands off the political plans for 2016 of his children. But he had hinted that he wants Sara to run for mayor in case he decides to retire from politics.
I am here to guide and advise them on what is good for Davao City. What is good for the city is what matters. It is not their political ambitions, said Duterte.
He thinks that based on their experience, his children had already learned the ropes. The way I see it, they are okay, he adds.
